So apparently FBI Director Robert Mueller was nearly caught up in a phishing scam. When he choose to share his near miss with his wife as a “teachable moment” she banned him from handling their online accounts. Director Mueller agreed that he should have been more aware of the scam than he was. To me this is a perfect example of why we must always be thinking about what we are doing and who is asking for information.
In my opinion the biggest leak of information to criminals is by individuals over corporations. While businesses have a responsibility to preserve our information we too have the same responsibility. It’s our responsibility to ask why information is needed and what it’s being used for. Businesses and governments need to stop asking for information that they don’t have a valid need to obtain.
